Chinese Innovation and Industrial Policy Training Program
The University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation will be conducting two training courses on Chinese Innovation and Industrial Policy and Chinese Defense and Strategic Innovation Policy in Washington D.C. in June 2023. These courses will be held back-to-back and can be taken individually or together. They provide a comprehensive overview and detailed insights into China’s efforts to become a global innovation and industrial power, commercially and militarily.
Three-Day Course, June 26 – 28, Washington, D.C.
The Executive Training Course on Chinese Innovation and Industrial Policy examines China’s pursuit of science, technology, innovation, and industrial development in the 21st Century and assesses its performance track record and long-term goals and prospects. Key issues that will be covered during the course include the following:
- China’s grand strategic thinking towards its technology development, especially a detailed look at the Innovation-Driven Development Strategy
- Organization and structure of the Chinese innovation and industrial eco-systems
- Assessing major science, technology, and innovation plans, including 5 year plans, 15 year medium and long-term science and technology development plans
- Assessing major industrial policy plans, such as the Strategic Emerging Industries Plan and Made in China 2025 Plan.
- Case studies of several technological and industrial sectors such as the semi-conductor industry.
- Key sources of financial support and investment such as government guidance funds.
- Comparing China’s innovation and industrial development with its counterparts in Japan, South Korea, the U.S., and other advanced industrialized countries.
- Provincial dimensions of Chinese innovation and industrial policies.
The course will be led by Prof. Barry Naughton and Prof. Tai Ming Cheung, both from the University of California San Diego. Prof. Naughton is a leading authority on the Chinese economy and Chinese industrial policy. Prof. Cheung specializes in Chinese defense innovation, military modernization, science and technology policy, and political economy of security issues.
