At the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), our mission is to use rigorous research, training, and engagement with decisionmakers to improve policies and practices in ways that help reduce conflict and improve global cooperation. DownloadThe year 2010 was a successful one for IGCC despite the financial struggles of the UC system. The U.S. Department of Defense launched the Minerva program to support national security-oriented university social science research at universities, and IGCC was among the winners of the program’s first grant allocation, allowing it to initiate two new major five-year research programs.
To that end, IGCC began its Development and Conflict Research (DACOR), is a multidisciplinary program on political violence, governance, and development, looking at conflict areas in Northern Ireland, the Philippines, Iraq, the West Bank, Yemen, Colombia, and even Afghanistan, where the researchers work with senior U.S. and Afghan government and military officials. The Project on the Study of Innovation and Technology in China (SITC) also started in 2010, focusing on the security consequences of China’s technological innovation. SITC began a work program to understand the approaches, challenges, and prospects for success in China’s quest for technological transformation.
