Gilad Wenig

Gilad Wenig is a PhD candidate in sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research examines how military and political power are constructed, legitimized, and exercised in contexts of empire, war, revolution, and coups. His dissertation investigates the micro-foundations of the British Empire, with a focus on the army officer corps at the turn of the nineteenth century. Drawing on extensive archival records and comparative-historical and computational methods, he traces patterns of mobility within and across the empire to understand how imperial structures were built and sustained. He also works on Egypt and the broader Middle East. He was previously a summer associate and adjunct policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, as well as a visiting PhD student at the University of Cambridge.
