Anthony Fontes is an assistant professor at the School of International Service at American University. His scholarship and teaching focus on theories of violence, illicit economies, Latin America, carceral continuums, and human rights. His dissertation traces the elusive loops and feedback effects between criminal networks, security policies, and discursive reproductions of violent crime that have made transnational gangs (maras) evolve into vehicles of violence and powerful symbols of social decay.
