Rohan Advani

Dissertation Fellow
UC Los Angeles

Rohan Advani is a Ph.D. candidate in the sociology department at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research examines how states use the financial tools at their disposal to bolster national economic development in a liberalized and globalized political economy. Using the cases of sovereign wealth funds in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he studies the financialization of state-led developmentā€”both its historical roots and contemporary practices. His project helps illustrate how small states use finance and non-traditional developmental strategies to navigate an increasingly multipolar world. His research will contribute to the sociologies of finance, development, small states, and state capitalism. Rohan received an M.A. in Near Eastern studies from New York University and a BSFS in international affairs from Georgetown University.
