Shengkuo Hu is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at UC Merced. In his dissertation, which will consist of three stand-alone articles, he plans to broadly investigate the negative effects of “good” institutions on political violence. His dissertation shows that these well-intended institutions do not always have the intended effect of reducing political violence because the actors who design and implement them can tailor the changes or decisions to meet their interests, which are often not reducing political violence.
