Steven Liao

Associate Professor
Department of Political Science, UC Riverside

Steven Liao is an associate professor in the department of political science at UC Riverside. He serves as a member of IGCC’s steering committee and is also an affiliated scholar (non-resident) at UC San Diego’s 21st Century China Center.

Liao’s research interests lie in the intersection of international political economy and political methodology. Much of his research uses large-scale administrative data to understand the politics of economic globalization. His research projects have examined the influence of firms on immigration policymaking, the politics of foreign real estate investments, big data and the evolution of international trade relations, and the politics of Chinese Renminbi internationalization. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in the American Journal of Political Science, International Studies Quarterly, The Journal of Politics, Nature Human Behaviour, and The Review of International Organizations.

Before joining UC Riverside, Steven was a postdoctoral research associate at the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Politics (2015) and his B.A. from National Chengchi University (Taiwan) in Political Science, Economics, and Diplomacy (2008).
