Kai Thaler

Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Kai M. Thaler is an assistant professor in the Department of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with affiliations in the Department of Political Science and the Latin American & Iberian Studies Program. His research examines civil conflict and political violence, security, protests and repression, and democracy and authoritarianism, especially in Africa and Latin America. His book When Rebels Win: Ideology, Statebuilding, and Power after Rebel Victory in Civil Wars is under contract with Cornell University Press. He has also published articles in journals including Comparative Politics, the Journal of Democracy, the Journal of Politics, Security Studies, and World Development. He holds a PhD in Government from Harvard University and previously spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Sié Chéou-Kang Center for International Security and Diplomacy at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies.
